The Mazie Jones Gallery

The Mazie Jones Gallery was named in honor of Mazie Jones Levenson
by the Watauga County Arts Council’s Board of Directors. The Jones
House Community Center, owned by the Town of Boone, was the private
home of the family of Boone’s first resident physician, Dr. J.
Walter Jones, for over seventy years. His daughter, Mazie’s,
foresight and love for the arts, culture, and history has ensured
that the Jones House exists today as a community and cultural center
meeting the ever-growing need for space for meetings, events, and
cultural activities.
Exhibits in the gallery are presented by the Arts Council and seek
to showcase the work of our fine local artists. Each month features
a new exhibit and is launched by a gallery reception which is held
on the first Friday of the month from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.
Applications to exhibit work in the Mazie Jones Gallery may be
obtained from the WAC staff or on the web at
www.watauga-arts.org and
are scheduled three to twelve months in advance. Group applications
are also accepted. Artists exhibiting in the Jones House galleries
must live in Watauga County or an adjoining county for at least some
portion of the year.
For further information, contact the Watauga County Arts Council.
The Open Door Gallery
The
Open Door Gallery was established in 1993 by the Watauga County Arts
Council’s Board of Directors and endowed with the mission of serving
new and emerging artists, including student artists.
Considered a “teaching gallery,” the exhibits are typically hung by
the artists themselves with the advice and occasional assistance of
the WAC staff or Gallery Committee. Artists are also responsible for
creating their own labels, artist statements, and other explanatory
materials.
Exhibiting in the Open Door Gallery is an opportunity for the new or
emerging artist to show and possibly sell their work. The size of
the room makes the exhibit less daunting and more approachable for
first-time exhibitors. Exhibits last for one month and a reception
for all the exhibiting artists in the three Jones House galleries is
held on the first Friday of the month from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.

The Senior Gallery
The Senior Gallery was established in the mid-80’s by the Watauga
County Arts Council’s Board of Directors and endowed
with
the mission of serving senior adult artists. Managed in cooperation
with the Lois E. Harrell Senior Center, the Arts Council charges no
commission on the sale of work sold through this gallery. (Our usual
gallery commission is 25%.)
Each warm-weather month, one of the regularly exhibiting senior
artists is selected by the Senior Center as that month’s featured
artist. The works of that artist are displayed in a grouping and the
artist is honored at the Arts Council’s regular gallery reception
which is held on the first Friday of the month from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.
Artists interested in exhibiting their work in the Senior Gallery
should contact Sherry Harmon at the Lois E. Harrell Senior Center.
